This is NOT a productivity system.

Really. It's not.

I have spent HUNDREDS of hours researching and testing productivity solutions and systems trying to find the "perfect" one.

While many seemed great in theory, I often found them difficult or time consuming to implement and, more importantly, a challenge to maintain.

I took a step back and realized that I was approaching it all wrong. I kept looking for the perfect method without first understanding the fundamentals of productivity.

Methods are great. They can help us to reach our goals quickly—after all, someone invested the time to figure out a way that works. For them. Or for a certain application. But if circumstances change, then methods can become outdated and useless, putting us back to where we started.

By focusing on the fundamentals, we learn the core of what we need to do, allowing us to choose the best method for our particular needs. There is never a shortage of methods available, but principles never change.

So, I shifted my approach and uncovered the common elements to all the systems I had tried. This helped me to define the foundational principles that these systems were built on. I have brought these principles together in my Oh! EEK! model—a simple way to remember these core principles.

So, what is Oh! EEK!?

Well, it's really just an easy way to remember OEEC—Organized, Effective, Efficient, and Consistent.

It's also what comes to mind when you realize you've dropped the ball. Did you get that expense report done? No? Oh! (Shoot!) EEK! (This is not good!).

When you have an Oh! EEK! moment, stop and ask yourself these four questions:

Am I organized?

Do I know what I need to do and when I need to do it? Can I find what I need when I need it?

Am I effective?

Are the things I'm working on getting me closer to my goals? Am I getting the results I want?

Am I efficient?

Am I spending the appropriate amount of time relative to the importance of the task?

Am I consistent?

Am I doing what I need to do on a regular basis?

Are you having an Oh! EEK! moment right now?
